When we got back to the retreat, the press had dispersed.

I expected them to be back any minute but for now, we enjoyed some blessed peace as we walked into the cool foyer and saw Ariana sitting behind the reception, tapping away at her laptop.

She looked up and smiled hesitantly at us.

"Welcome to Zenon's retreat haven," she said, and then gave a nervous little laugh. "Funny, isn't it? It was just yesterday that you walked in, and I was sitting here, and that's what I said to you." She glanced around uneasily. "And now, look at us here."

Rosie walked over to her and gave her shoulder a quick squeeze. "I'm sorry you're going through this," she said. "But we'll sort it out, I promise."

Ariana's brittle facade crumbled, and she sighed and looked down. Rosie and I exchanged a wary glance. It seemed to us that Ariana was on the brink of a nervous breakdown.

"At least you got most of your money back," I said to her, trying to cheer her up. "You can close things down here and move on with your life."

"Yes," she said. "But I can't believe I've given up so much of my life, you know." She looked up at me. "You guys thought I had killed him. What if the police think the same thing? And then they lock me up and I lose even more years of my life. What if..." She trailed off and began to wring her hands nervously.

"None of that's going to happen," I told her confidently. "Just help us out, and we'll get the real killer behind bars."

"My granddaughter never fails," Nanna said proudly. "She'll find the real killer, and then you can move back on with your life. Go back to your hometown. Maybe buy another house. Zenon didn't manage to spend most of your money. He died before that happened."

"That's true," Ariana said. "Maybe I could do that. House prices have dropped a bit since I sold, so maybe it'll work out."

"Yes," I said encouragingly. "In the meantime, I wonder if you could tell us something."

"Anything," Ariana said, looking up at us hopefully. "Anything that might help with the investigation.”

“I know there was nothing romantic going on between you and Zenon, but what about between Zenon and any of the other women here?"

Ariana looked at us confused. "I don't think so," she said. "Not that I've noticed."

"Are you sure?" Nanna asked. "What about Sasha?"

Ariana gulped and shook her head. "Look, I can't say for sure. There was so much Zenon was doing behind my back that I wasn't aware of." She let out a heavy sigh. "I read that man completely wrong. And now, how can I say for sure that he wasn't having an affair with Sasha or Philippa or even..." She dropped her voice and looked around before whispering, "Linda Wilson."

The three of us laughed at that. It was hard to imagine the sharp, intelligent Linda Wilson cheating on her husband with a man like Zenon.

"But what about Philippa?" I asked.
